The 'S' Word

I've tried so hard to make sure my kids don't use bad words. Two words I despise are "hate" and "stupid". It is difficult to keep them from these words since they pop up frequently on children's shows.

And there are still times when I'm not thinking. The other day when Eli came in to tell me, "Mama! Mama! Mama! They said the 's' word on SpongeBob!"

I was shocked! "They said what?"

Eli: "The 's' word! They said the 's' word!"

I was thinking that surely they wouldn't say that word on SpongeBob. So I finally asked Eli, "Honey, did they say 'shit' on SpongeBob?"

Eli looked at me mortified. "NO! They said stupid!"

So, I'm the one that ended up teaching him a new word. Great!

S also stands for "Shhhhh!" We don't say stupid or hate in our house, either, but it's hard since the kids are now 13 and 9. They hear it at school multiple times a day.

Shit.

Yup, we don't encourage the use of those words at our home either but it's hard when other kids say it. Shut up is one of my peeves. I can't stand to hear someone say that. It's a "bad word" at our house.

Why did the chicken cross the playground? to get to the other slide, of course... lol! (my 9 year old taught me that one).

It's a real conundrum: TV versus morality/manners... you don't want to force your kids to NOT watch Nick, since everyone else does... but somehow you want to be sure they don't decide that Squidward is a role model.

I'm thinking they'll figure it out, though, from the little things you do as a role model. It's like they say, the power of small can make all the difference!

I don't like "stupid" either, but after hearing some of the things the other kids say I'm happy with just "stupid"... The 4-year-old son of an aquaintance once told me to shut the f*** up. I couldn't believe it!

Hilarious! I gave birth to #2 five months ago. We were having our "celebration dinner" with our 16 month old and I said, "Oh Shit." Not a second later, she was running around the postpartum room saying "oh shit, oh shit, oh shit." At least you lasted longer!!

So true. Always hard to get the little ones not to say bad words. I'm working on my 6 year old boy to stop saying potty words.

Pattie said...

The "s" word is also a no no in our house!! They have no idea that there is another "s" word out there!

That is cute! I try to keep my kids from telling each other to shut up.

Isn't that always the way!

Same thing happened to my son in kindergarten except he told his TEACHER that one of his classmates said the "S" word...so she made him tell her what was said.

He came home in tears b/c "Miss Campbell MADE me say the "S" word!"!

While dialing the phone to jump through it and strangle her, I came to my senses and asked him if he meant "stupid" and he gasped b/c I said it and nodded.

WHEW!
His teacher was not harmed during taping of this incident.

Haha! Perfect! I know what that's all about. I have a 2 year old who picks up EVERYTHING!

Hey,
I was reading your blog and some of your archives and I think they are very entertaining and somewhat informative. I am not a wife or a mother, but I am a 21 years old college student that is interning at this children clothes-manufacturing company by the name of Kahn Lucas. They make wonderful little girl clothing from newborn to size 16. There are many separate labels under Kahn Lucas that are sold at various different stores that you may or may not be familiar with. The labels under Kahn Lucas are: Youngland, Emily West, Jenny & Me, Sweet Heart Rose, and Dollie & Me. These amazing collections can be found at stores such as JcPenny’s, Kohl’s, Sears, Burlington Coat Factory, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, BJ’s, Belk, and Lord and Taylor. I know for a fact that girls all over the world love the clothing because as a part of my interning responsibilities, I am in charge of organizing all of the post cards that are sent in everyday by these same little girls whose parents bought them an outfit from one of our clothes divisions and they continuously write about how much they love the clothes.

Even if you’re not particularly interested in children clothing, they also make very cute dolls under their Dollie & Me collection. What’s so cool about the Dollie & Me collection is they make matching outfits so the girl’s outfit is the same as her doll. Check out the website for yourself at Kahnlucas.com. Not only is all the clothes that they sell on this website, but they have very cool games that I have also played quite a few myself during my spare time.

Whether you have daughters or not, with the holiday season just around the corner, these amazing pieces of clothing (and dolls) are so exquisite they would make lovely gifts.

P.S. Your story was hilarious... when I was little girl, the "S" word in my house was STUPID too. No one was allowed to say it.

I was not happy when I heard the word "stupid" on Spongebob. I don't allow either of my sons to use that word and I don't allow my students to use that word in school. As far as teaching a new word, I would have thought it was "s*it" too. Lol
